The Exposure Triangle Explained: Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO Without the Jargon

Every photographer eventually meets the exposure triangle, usually in the form of a confusing diagram and a wave of numbers that seem designed to keep beginners out. Yet the concept underneath is genuinely simple: three settings control how bright your photo is, and each one changes something else about the image as a side effect. Once you understand the side effects, manual shooting stops being intimidating and starts being a set of creative choices.

Think of Light as Water Filling a Bucket

A correctly exposed photo is like a bucket filled exactly to the brim with light. You control three things: how wide the tap opens (aperture), how long you leave it running (shutter speed), and how big the bucket is (ISO, roughly speaking — it's really how much the signal is amplified, but the analogy holds up well enough to be useful).

Open the tap wider and you need less time. Use a smaller bucket and it fills faster. Change any one setting and you can compensate with the others to get the same brightness. That interchangeability is the whole "triangle": many different combinations produce identical exposure, but each combination looks different in ways that have nothing to do with brightness.

Aperture: Depth of Field Is the Side Effect

Aperture is the adjustable opening inside your lens, measured in f-numbers. Confusingly, small numbers mean big openings: f/1.8 is wide open, f/16 is a pinhole. Wide apertures let in lots of light — and, as a side effect, produce a shallow zone of sharpness. That's the dreamy background blur in portraits. Narrow apertures let in less light and render more of the scene sharp, which is why landscape photographers live around f/8 to f/11.

The creative question is never "which aperture is correct?" but "how much of this scene do I want in focus?" A portrait against a cluttered street begs for f/2; a mountain range with wildflowers in the foreground wants f/11. Decide that first, then let the other two settings balance the exposure.

Shutter Speed: Motion Is the Side Effect

Shutter speed is simply how long the sensor is exposed, from thousandths of a second to whole minutes. Fast speeds freeze motion — a bird mid-wingbeat at 1/2000s looks carved from stone. Slow speeds record movement as blur, turning a waterfall into silk at half a second.

There is also the unglamorous side effect of your own shaking hands. A rough rule: handheld, keep your shutter speed at least as fast as your focal length (1/100s for a 100mm lens), though modern stabilisation buys you a few extra stops. When the shutter speed you want is slower than you can hold, a tripod stops being optional.

Again, ask the creative question first: do I want to freeze this moment or show its movement? A child running, rain falling, traffic at dusk — each can be frozen or blurred, and the two results tell completely different stories.

ISO: Noise Is the Side Effect

ISO determines how much the camera amplifies the light it collected. Low ISO (100–200) gives the cleanest image. Raising it lets you shoot in darker conditions or use faster shutter speeds, at the cost of noise — that grainy texture most visible in shadows and skies.

Modern cameras handle high ISO remarkably well, and a sharp photo at ISO 3200 always beats a blurry one at ISO 400. Treat ISO as the setting of last resort: fix your aperture for depth of field, set the shutter speed your subject demands, and then raise ISO only as far as needed to fill the bucket.

Putting It Together in the Field

A practical workflow beats theory every time:

1. Decide what the photo is about. Isolation or context? Frozen or flowing?

2. Set the priority setting first. Aperture for depth-of-field decisions, shutter speed for motion decisions.

3. Balance with the second setting.

4. Raise ISO only if the first two leave you underexposed.

Semi-automatic modes exist precisely for this logic. Aperture priority (A/Av) lets you choose the f-stop while the camera picks shutter speed; shutter priority (S/Tv) does the reverse. Most working photographers spend their lives in these modes, not full manual — the skill is knowing which side effect matters for the shot in front of you.

Spend one week photographing the same subject at different combinations and the triangle will move from your notes into your hands. After that, exposure stops being maths and becomes what it was always meant to be: a way of deciding how a moment should feel.
